2 more suspects arrested in mob lynching case

Bhubaneswar: The state crime branch on Tuesday arrested two prime suspects in connection with the brutal mob lynching of railway constable Soumya Ranjan Swain, 32, in Balianta here on May 7, a case that sparked widespread outrage across Odisha.The accused have been identified as Panchanan Badjena alias Kalia, 39, and Ranjit Rana, 40, both residents of Balianta. “They were absconding. Our team tracked them to a forest in Ranapur, Nayagarh district, and arrested them,” said director general (Crime Branch) Vinaytosh Mishra. According to police sources, both men are employed in private firms in Bhubaneswar.“We identified them through video footage. They were part of a violent mob and assaulted Swain with sticks and wooden planks. Several others involved have also been identified and will be arrested soon,” Mishra said.With these arrests, the total number of accused in custody so far has risen to 15. Eleven were earlier nabbed by Balianta police, while four were taken into custody after the crime branch assumed charge of the investigation on May 9.Swain was tied to a pole and beaten to death in broad daylight on May 7 after a 22-year-old woman accused him of attempted rape on the road. The incident, which unfolded in the presence of police personnel, triggered sharp criticism of law enforcement for failing to prevent the lynching.
