Bhubaneswar: A young couple was brutally assaulted by two men in Berhampur’s Giri Road area on Monday, triggering public outrage after a video of the attack surfaced on social media.According to eyewitnesses, the assailants thrashed the couple with bamboo sticks in full public view. The viral video shows the young man lying helpless on the road while his girlfriend shields him from repeated blows. A motorcycle is also seen fallen nearby, suggesting the couple may have been intercepted before the assault. Onlookers appeared visibly shaken, with several passers-by stopping, but none intervening immediately.The victims were later rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Hospital sources confirmed that both sustained injuries but are currently in stable condition. Police said they have identified the accused persons and will arrest them soon.Police from Baidyanathpur police station reached the spot soon after the incident and have launched an investigation.SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M said 14 criminal cases are pending against the victim. “The attackers and the victim were working in a group. They had some differences. The attackers attacked the victim due to past enmity,” he added.The incident has sparked concern over public safety and the apparent reluctance of bystanders to intervene during violent crimes.
