Around 2000 people held, over 3,000kg cannabis seized during 5-day statewide drive

Bhubaneswar: Around 2,000 people were arrested in connection with different crimes, and over 3,000kg cannabis and weapons, as well as vehicles were seized during a statewide special drive by the state police in the past five days.The special drive, led by SPs and commissioners was conducted from May 12 to 16 across all police ranges in the state, under the direction of director general of police Y B Khurania.As many as 1,771 individuals were arrested through the execution of warrants, while 190 absconding accused were apprehended and presented in court. Action was taken against five notorious criminals under the National Security Act, 449 habitual offenders were booked under SEction 129 of BNSS, while actions were also taken against 643 individuals under Section 126 of BNSS.During this period, 31 NDPS cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 29 accused, from whom, over 3,026kg cannabis and 16.6 grams of brown sugar were seized. Six vehicles used in drug trafficking, two mobile phones and Rs 12,348 cash were also seized. Additionally, 716 excise cases were registered. Also, a total fine of over Rs 1.89 crore was collected for various road safety violations.For cattle smuggling, police registered five cases and arrested one accused. Prompt police action also resulted in the rescue of 33 cows from four vehicles.In illegal arms trade, nine cases were registered, and 13 individuals were arrested. From them, 20 unlicensed firearms were seized.
