Koraput: A 23-year-old man, arrested on Monday in connection with the alleged abduction of a minor girl, was found dead at Dabugaon police station in Nabarangpur district on Wednesday morning, sparking tension in the area. The deceased has been identified as Purna Kalar, a resident of Anchala village under Dabugaon police station limits. Police had arrested him on Monday in connection with the alleged kidnapping case, registered around two months back.Sources said Kalar had undergone a medical examination on Tuesday and was expected to be produced before a local court. However, he was later found hanging inside the police station’s toilet. Preliminary reports suggest he allegedly tore a strip of cloth from a bedsheet and used it to hang himself from the ventilator. The body was shifted to Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital for post-mortem. Heavy police deployment was made at the hospital and at Dabugaon police station. The incident sparked protests by family members of the deceased, who gathered outside the police station and questioned how the death occurred in police custody. They also staged a road blockade demanding justice, leading to traffic congestion between Nabarangpur and Dabugaon for nearly four hours.Nabarangpur superintendent of police Madkar Sandeep Sampat said the case would be thoroughly investigated to ascertain the circumstances under which the alleged suicide took place inside the police station.“A detailed probe has already been ordered and necessary action will be taken once we receive the report,” the SP said.
