AIIMS conducts 1st deceased donor liver transplant

Bhubaneswar: AIIMS Bhubaneswar carried out its first deceased donor liver transplant earlier this month, ahead of World Liver Day, after the family of a homoeopathic doctor agreed to donate her organs following brain stem death.Radha Parhi, a homoeopathic medical officer from Bhadrak district, expressed her wish to donate her organs even though she had been living with a platelet disorder for years.According to an official statement on Monday, doctors declared her brain stem dead on April 2.Her liver was transplanted on April 3 into a 46-year-old man by the surgical gastroenterology team.AIIMS said the recipient is recovering well and is likely to be discharged soon. The transplant was led by Dr Bramhadatta Pattnaik under the mentorship of Dr Viniyendra Pamecha from the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi.A multidisciplinary team, including specialists from anaesthesia, gastroenterology and critical care, supported the operation.AIIMS Bhubaneswar also gave Parhi with a Guard of Honour, led by medical superintendent Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy.
