Sambalpur: The district administration initiated the process of securing the geographical indication for sarasatia, the famous traditional sweet of Sambalpur. Collector (Sambalpur) Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar said the sweet, known for its distinctive taste and traditional medicinal properties, has long been a favourite among locals. Granting it a GI tag will help establish its unique identity at the national level, he added.According to officials, the required documentation, historical records and formation of a producers’ society for the GI application have already been completed. The application has been submitted through ORMAS with technical support from experts of OUAT. Official sources said the GI recognition would help in branding and promoting sarasatia boosting its demand in wider markets and benefiting families traditionally involved in its preparation.The administration expects the process to be completed within four to six months. Steps will also be taken to promote the cultivation of the ‘ganjer’ plant, a key ingredient used in making the traditional sweet.
