Koraput: The process for developing eco-tourism facilities around the Bada Nala irrigation reservoir in Padmapur block of Rayagada district has gained momentum, with the Rayagada forest division initiating a preliminary review of the proposal.The move follows a proposal highlighting the scenic reservoir’s tourism potential and its surrounding forest areas. Based on the proposal, the forest division has directed officials to conduct a feasibility study and field-level verification for the proposed eco-tourism project.According to official sources, a local social activist Sudarshan Padhi of Padmapur submitted an e-complaint and subsequently, the forest division ordered a joint review involving multiple government departments to examine the scope for tourism development around the reservoir and adjoining forest land.Officials said the reservoir and its associated infrastructure are under the administrative control of the water resources department. Therefore, any tourism-related activity, including boating facilities, jetty construction or recreational infrastructure, requires detailed technical assessment, proper reservoir management and strict public safety measures.“The reservoir area falls under the jurisdiction of the water resources department. Hence, any tourism infrastructure or recreational activity must comply with technical standards and safety protocols,” DFO (Rayagada) Sachin Annasaheb Ohle said.The adjoining forest areas, however, fall under the jurisdiction of the Rayagada forest division. Authorities clarified that all proposed tourism activities in these areas must strictly follow forest conservation laws and govt guidelines.Considering the proposal’s significance, the DFO directed the assistant executive engineer of the Padmapur Bada Nala canal sub-division and the range officer of Gudari range to jointly inspect the area and assess the project’s feasibility and long-term prospects.“They have been asked to submit a preliminary proposal report for consideration by higher authorities,” the DFO added.The development has generated optimism among local residents. If implemented, the eco-tourism project will boost the local tribal economy, create employment opportunities and showcase the natural beauty of the region, said Padhi.Officials said the Bada Nala Irrigation project irrigates over 9,000 hectares of land spread across Padmapur, Ramanaguda, Gudari and Gunupur blocks in the district.
