Search at BJD MLA’s residence in city sparks row

Bhubaneswar: Tensions flared between BJD and BJP after Kalahandi district police carried out a search at the residence of BJD MLA Manorama Mohanty in the city on Sunday in connection with a recent case filed against her husband. On March 15, Kalahandi police had registered a case against Durga Prasad Mohanty, husband of the Narla MLA, for allegedly issuing death threats to Narla tehsildar Bibhu Prasad Singh. He currently serves as the chairman of Narla block. A police team visited MLA Mohanty’s official residence in Bhubaneswar to trace him, but he could not be found. The legislator accused the police of misconduct. “They forcibly entered my residence in my absence and misbehaved with my daughter and domestic help,” Manorama alleged.Addressing the media, she alleged that her husband was falsely implicated because she refused to cross-vote in favour of the BJP during the recent Rajya Sabha election.“The case against my husband was registered just a day before Rajya Sabha election. Though the assembly is in session, police did not seek permission from the Speaker to search an MLA’s residence. This is clear abuse of power at the behest of the ruling BJP,” she told reporters. The BJP dismissed the allegations. “A criminal case has been registered against the MLA’s husband. He should show up and cooperate with the investigation,” said BJP state vice-president Bhabendra Panda.
