Bhubaneswar: Odisha set a Guinness World Record for the largest serving of pakhala during the state-level Pakhala Parba, organised by the tourism department in the city, on Friday.The department attempted to set the record by preparing 1,174 kg pakhala with 850 kg of rice. Pakhala was distributed among more than 2,000 underprivileged people.Sharing the news on X, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi posted, “With an unprecedented 1,174 kilograms prepared and presented in a single vessel, this historic achievement brings global recognition to Pakhala, one of Odisha’s most cherished traditional dishes, deeply rooted in our culture and daily life. This accomplishment reflects our commitment to promoting Odisha’s rich culinary heritage on the global stage. It is a proud moment for every Odia, as we take our timeless traditions from local to global, further strengthening Odisha’s identity as a hub of cultural and gastronomic excellence.”Addressing the event, the CM said, “The primary objective of Pakhala Divas is to take Odia cuisine to the global stage and unite Odias so that the traditional food does not get overshadowed by western food culture.”Recalling his childhood association with pakhala, Majhi added, “This is not just the food of the poor, but also a favourite offering of Mahaprabhu Jagannath. Tanka torani and pakhala bhog are offered at Shrimandira, reflecting the purity and value of a simple lifestyle.”He also described pakhala as a “zero waste” food. Highlighting its probiotic properties, the CM said the beneficial bacteria present in pakhala help eliminate harmful bacteria in the body. “World Pakhala Divas is no longer confined to Odisha and has grown into a global celebration, with Odias across India and abroad observing the day with pride. Pakhala has become a medium to connect the Odia diaspora with their roots,” the CM said.During the event, Majhi interacted with Odias living in Indonesia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Singapore and 15 Indian states via video link. He also felicitated chefs who have been promoting Odia cuisine at national and international levels.
