Migrant labourer’s family appeals to govt to bring his body back from Maldives

Berhampur: Family members of a migrant worker from Ganjam district’s Komanda village who died at his workplace in the Maldives, four days ago, have appealed to the district administration on Tuesday to make arrangements to bring his body back for his last rites. The deceased, Shankar Behera (40), was working as a labourer in a construction company.Due to his sudden illness he was admitted to a hospital and died on March 14. One of his friends intimated his family about his death over phone. Shankar was scheduled to return to the village on March 13. “We don’t know how he died. We requested the administration to bring his body to the village,” said Murali Behera, his father. He said his son was working in the Maldives for the last four years and was the only bread winner of his family.District labour officer (DLO), Chhatrapur, Barsharani Jena said they have conducted a preliminary inquiry into the matter on Tuesday following the request of his family members. The statements of his family members have been recorded. “We will submit the inquiry report to the state labour commissioner soon through the district collector to take further steps,” she said.Behera is the third migrant worker from Khallikote block to have died in a foreign country recently. Kuna Khuntia, a migrant worker from Naikanapalli, died in Doha, Qatar, due to heart attack on March 7. Souri Behera, another migrant worker of Laxmanpur died at his workplace at Muscat, Oman on March 12. Khuntia was brought to his village on March 12 following the intervention of the government from Doha.
