Turkey’s army and allied Syrian rebel forces surrounded the city of Afrin in northwestern Syria. They gained control on areas of critical importance of the region on Monday. The forces encircled Afrin on Tuesday.

Turkish shellfire targetted all roads of the city. Hundreds of civilians reportedly fled the city to nearby areas. 

The Turkish military surrounded the Kurdish-held city of Afrin in northern Syria. They focus on an offensive against a Kurdish militia.

Groups  involved with  Turkey

The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitoring group confirmed the development. Turkey along with Free Syrian Army(FSA) rebel group launched in January an air-and-ground operation. Afrin in the northwest of Syria vanquish the US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) fighters near its border.

Turkey considered the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Syria. Its armed wing YPG terrorist groups ties to the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The PKK has waged a decades-long armed fight against the Turkish state. It killed tens of thousands of people there.

The situation of people in Afrin

The SOHR said on Monday that hundreds of civilians had already fled Afrin as Turkey advanced. Inthe area of Nubul, more than 2,000 civilians arrived.  Pro-regime forces are controlling it. Hundreds more were still on the road.

Afrin city is the main urban Centre in the YPG-controlled enclave. On the Turkish border, it is home to about 350,000 people.

Turkey has also threatened to push its military operations to Manbij. This is to sweep Syrian Kurdish fighters from the length of its borders.

Turkey’s repeated threats to push to Manbij have caused complications with NATO ally the US. The US had its troops deployed in the area. It is preparing to back YGP against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant which could infuriate Ankara.

Effects of Turkey efforts

The Great Escape is the headline of a Turkish newspaper. It had pictures of civilians trying to flee Afrin.

A deal had been reached with Washington for the YPG to withdraw from Manbij to ensure its security Turkish and US soldiers will be stationed there.

3393 terrorists have been neutralized. People who surrendered had been captured or killed.   This operation killed hundreds of Syrian rebels and Turkish soldiers.
