Most of you might have seen Mahabharata on television and you might also be aware of the role of Queen Draupadi.

Qualities of Queen Draupadi

Queen Draupadi was the queen of Five Pandavas in Mahabharata. Apart from being beautiful and generous, she was a courageous woman too. She could not tolerate injustice and ill-treatment at all. Draupadi is Kula kundalini which binds the five chakras in the human body and is present in spinal cords of Humans.

Some unknown facts about Queen Draupadi of Mahabharata

Draupadi creator is her father Drupada, king of Panchala who aim of destroying the Kuru household who humiliated Drona who used his students Pandavas and Kauravas to destroy Panchala. She took birth as an adult with no childhood to destroy the family.

She is the incarnation of MahaKali born from fire to assist lord Krishna to destroy all the arrogant king.

Draupadi other forms are

  • Panchali (meaning one from the kingdom of Panchala)
  • Yajnaseni (meaning one born from a Yajna or fire-sacrifice)
  • Mahabhaaratii (great wife of the five descendants of Bharata
  • Sairandhri (an expert maid, her assumed name during her second exile in which she worked as Virat kingdom’s queen Sudeshna’s hair-stylist).

There are many things about Queen Draupadi which you all might not be aware of. Do you know about the Vardan which she got from Lord Shiva? In this article, I’ll be sharing with you some unknown facts about her.

It was not a coincidence which made Queen Draupadi the wife of 5 Pandavas, it was all preplanned from starting. Lord Sri Krishna told Queen Draupadi that in her previous birth, she worshipped Lord Shiva wholeheartedly in order to get the best husband who could please her mind.

Vardan given to Queen Draupadi in her previous birth

 In her previous birth, she asked Lord Shiva to give her the husband who possesses 14 good qualities. Lord Shiva told her that it is not possible for a single person to have so many qualities. But she did not listen to anything and got stuck to her wish of 14 quality husbands.

Draupadi demanded a husband having at least 5 qualities

  1. Religious (Dharma)
  2. Powerful (shaktishali)
  3. Patience (dhairya)
  4. Archer (Dhanusdhar)
  5. Handsome ( Roopwan)

Lord Shiva got pleased with her dedication and devotion and gave her the Vardan of 14 husbands having 14 different qualities she desires in her next life. Draupadi in her previous birth was the daughter of Nal and Damayanti and her name was Nalyani.

After getting this Vardan, Draupadi asked Lord Shiva that is it a boon or a curse? Lord Shiva told her that she would get pure and holy after taking bath every day in the morning.

Five Pandavas who became Draupadi Husband 

Draupadi got all these 14 qualities in five Pandavas

  • Yudhishthira-  Religious (Dharma)
  • Bhima – Powerful ( Shaktishali)
  • Arjun – Archer (Dhanusdhar)
  • Nakul – Patience (dhairya)
  • Sahdev – Handsome (Roopwan)

1.  Yudhishtir known for his wisdom of Dharma.

2.  The mighty Bheem has the strength of a thousand elephants together.

3.  Arjun was the most courageous and skilled in battle.

4.  The twins, Nakul and Sahdev were known for their divine love. 

Queen Draupadi placed a condition in front of Lord Shiva before becoming the wife of these 5 Pandavas. Her condition was that she would never share her husbands with any second woman. In spite of the common practice polygamy at that time, Pandavas was not allowed to bring any other woman to Indraprastha.

However later Arjun with the consent of Draupadi brought his second wife Subhadra to Indraprastha.  With the advice of Lord Shri Krishna Draupadi allowed Arjun to bring his second wife and gave her the place in her house.

Queen Draupadi condition for Pandavas 

Draupadi placed the condition in front of Pandavas that at the time only one Pandava will be allowed to enter her chamber. The Pandava who will enter her chamber will keep his shoes outside the chamber. The one who will violate this condition will be sent to long-term exile.

 It is said that one-day when Yudhisthar was in her chamber, the dog stole his shoes. Unaware of the fact Arjun entered the chamber of Draupadi seeing no shoes outside and saw his brother Yudhisthir with Draupadi. Arjun was sent to exile as per the condition of Draupadi. Embarrassed Draupadi cursed all the dogs.

Queen Draupadi blessed to be a virgin

Draupadi used to walk through fire in order to regain her virginity and purity before going to the other Husband.  Such rules were never seen before this. Pandavas have other wives but these wives used to stay with their parents and they used to travel to them in order to visit their wives in four years.

She is Panchakanyas, known as five virgins, one who owns virginity and have the ability to regain it.

“Ahalya Draupadi  Kunti Tara Mandodari tatha
pancakanyaḥ smarennityaṃ mahapatakanasinim”

It removes sin when chanted this mantra and contains following Panchakanyas in this mantra.

  • Ahalya
  • Draupadi
  • Kunti
  • Tara
  • Mandodari

Why didn’t Duryodhan participate in the Swayamvara of Queen Draupadi?

Kaurav Duryodhana did not participate in the Swayamvara of Draupadi as he was already married to Queen Bhanumati, the princess of Kalinga. Duryodhana promised her wife Bhanumati that he would never marry another woman because of which he did not participate in the ceremony and kept his promise.

Durvasa Rishi saved Draupadi from Chirharan 

We all have seen the Draupadi Chirharan on television. But do you know who saved her from that situation?

In Shiva Purana, it was Rishi Durvasa who saved Draupadi from Chirharan. It is said that once Rishi Durvasa was bathing in Ganga River and his clothes went away with the flow of river Ganga. Then Queen Draupadi helped him by giving him the piece of her sari.After which Rishi Durvasa gave her the Vardan which saved her from getting nude by Dushashan.

When Queen Draupadi was insulted she demanded justice from King Dhritarashtra of Hastinapur directly. When Chiktisak tried to insult her in the form of Sairandhree, she asked King Virat for justice.

She even criticized her husband Bhima, Nakul, Arjun, Sehdev, Yudhisthir along with Bhishma, Drona, Kripacharya, Raja Virat and Dhritarashtra for not protecting the honor and respect of the woman.

Avatars of Queen Draupadi 

According to Narad Purana and Vayu Purana, she is the combined avatar of

  • Goddess Shyamala (wife of Dharma)
  • Bharati (wife of Vayu)
  • Shachi (wife of Indra)
  • Usha (wife of Ashwin)
  • Parvati (wife of Shiva)

 1.   She was earlier born as Vedavati, who cursed Raavan.

2.    She then took birth as Sita who became the reason for Raavan death.

3.    Her third incarnation was partial either Damayanti or her daughter Nalayani.

4.    Her fifth incarnation was Draupadi herself.

Another side of Queen Draupadi

Asvatthama, the son of Drona, in the middle of the night killed five sleeping sons of Draupadi. Asvatthama was captured and brought back to Draupadi by Krishna, Arjuna, and Bhima and ask her to take the decision for him. Draupadi did not punish him as she could feel the pain which Drona’s wife would feel after seeing her son dead.

Queen Draupadi cursed Ghatotkacha

It is said that when Ghatotkacha was visiting her father kingdom, he did not pay respect to Draupadi even on his mother Hidimba order.  This made her felt humiliated and she got very angry.

Draupadi cursed Ghatotkacha’s that his life would be short, and he would be killed without a fight. In return, Hidimba in her anger cursed Draupadi’s children.

Lord Krishna friend of Draupadi

Draupadi always considered Lord Krishna as her close friend and Krishna use to call her as Sakhi.  It was Lord Krishna who was always there to rescue Draupadi from all kinds of problems.
