She has given many super hits films to Bollywood like Abhimaan and Mili. In her film Guddi, she won million hearts with her innocence and impressionable role in the film.
Jaya Bachchan life history
Jaya Bachchan was born to a Bengali-Hindi family in Jabalpur on 9 April 1948. Her mother Indira Bhaduri and father Taroon Kumar Bhaduri was a writer, stage artist, and a journalist. She has completed her education at St. Joseph’s Convent Sr. Sec. School, Bhopal.
Jaya Bachchan entered the television world with a supporting role in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film, Mahanagar at an early age of 15 with Anil Chatterjee and Madhabi Mukherji. After that, she also acted in two Bengali films Suman and Dhanyee Meye.
She learned acting from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Pune and reached Mumbai with the role of Guddi in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee film, Guddi in 1971. Jaya Bachchan did an outstanding role in the film Jawani Deewani in 1972 and was also appreciated for a negative role in the film Anamika 1973.
Jaya Bachchan did back to back super hit films Uphar (1971), Parichay (1972), Piya Ka Ghar(1972), Bawarchi (1972) and Koshish (1972).
Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar played the role of Deaf couple in the film depicting their struggles as a handicapped person. This film inspired and motivated her for doing the social work in future.
Chupke Chupke (1975)
It was Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic film which featured Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore and Jaya Bachchan. In this film, Jaya Bachchan played the role of a Biological student and won many hearts with her amazing acting.
This was her last film as a lead actress opposite to her husband Amitabh Bachchan. The film was directed by Yash Chopra in which Jaya Bachchan played the onscreen wife of Amitabh Bachchan. In this film, Jaya Bachchan showed her patience level when her husband Amitabh was madly in love with Rekha.
Her love story:
She first acted with her future husband in the film Bansi Birju (1972) and then B.R. Ishara’s Ek Nazar which was released in the same year. Jaya Bachchan even acted with him in the super hit film Zanjeer (1973) followed by Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975) and Sholay (1975). It was after the film Zanzeer when Jaya Bachchan was in love with Amitabh Bachchan and married each other on 3 June 1973.
During the shoot of Sholay Jaya Bachchan was pregnant and later gave birth to Shweta Nanda on 17th March 1974 and Abhishek Bachchan on 5th February 1976. She decided to quit films for raising her children. Shweta Nanda is married to industrialist Nikhil Nanda of Kapoor family on 16th February 1997 and has two children Navya Naveli and Agastya Nanda. While Abhishek Bachchan got married to the Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai on 20th April 2007.
Jaya returned to Bollywood
Later in 1980, she wrote a film Shahenshah (1988) which featured Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. With the gap of about 18 years, Jaya Bachchan returned to Bollywood with Govind Nihalani’s Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998). In the year 2000, she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in film Fiza.
Later she also acted in Karan Johar film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) along with her husband and was also seen in Karan Johar film Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) in which she played the role of Preity Zinta’s mother and received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. She again received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for kabhi khushi kabhi gham Film and also the Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role female in 2001.
She also acted with her son Abhishek Bachchan in the film Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) and Drona (2008). Jaya Bachchan also acted in the Bangladeshi Film Meherjaan with Victor Banerjee and Humayun Faridi.
Her Political carrier:
Jaya Bachchan later decided to enter politics in 2004 as a member of parliament of the Samajwadi Party. She represented Rajya Sabha till March 2006. Again she was reelected in June 2006 until July 2010. Jaya Bachchan was re-elected in again for the third time in 2012 and again in 2018 for her fourth term in the Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party.

Jaya Bachchan has been awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 and Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 1992. She won the total of nine Filmfare Awards, three for Best Actress and three for Best Supporting Actress.
