A samosa is a triangular shaped backed or fried dish gives a feeling of great taste.  It is a crispy spicy snack from India.  Samosa is so delicious that even thinking of it pour mouth with water.  Its outer layer prepared maida. It normally contains peas, mashed potato, fried onion, cabbage, carrots, and so many spices.  Pine nuts are also used.  Corriander, sesame, cumin turmeric, chili add so much to its taste.  It is served with a red sauce which is called chutney.


We were discussing where Samosa originated, who first prepared its recipe.  There is no clear indication of as to where it actually discovered.  But we have some texts which give us some idea about from where samosa originated.  According to Oxford Companion to Food, the Indian samosa is merely the best known of an entire family of stuffed pastries or dumplings popular from Egypt and Zanzibar to Central Asia and West China.

We find a description in the literature of an Iranian historiographer Abolfazi Beyhagi, it says that traders came from Central Asia brought its recipe with them.  In around 1300 Amir Khusro, a royal poet of Delhi sultanate wrote something about this delicious dish Samosa.  Its says that princes and nobles of that time used to enjoy Somosa prepared from onion, ghee, meet etc.  In the 14th century Ibn Battuta, a traveler and explorer mention about a meal which they called Samushak or sambusak.

Description of that Samushak or Sambusak was about the same as of our present Samosas.  A 16th-century Mughal literature Ain-I-Akbari also mention the recipe of Qutab about which it claims that people of Hindustan used to call it Sanbusah.  From where Samosa originated may be an interesting question, but more interesting is how popular it is in the present world.  It is so sophisticated.  Anyone can prepare anywhere at anytime and can enjoy its rich taste.

About 40 grams of vegetable samosa contains approximately 80 calories, 2 gram protein, 3 gram fat, 1 gram fiber, 11 gram carbohydrates, and 1 gram of sugar.  There are different kinds of Samosa available on the market.  The actual nutritional values depend on the actual content involved in its preparation.  A samosa prepared using butter-based pastry and filled with mashed potatoes then fried in oil will contain more fat, carbohydrate, and calories.  Whereas the Samosa made with thin wonton wrapper or phyllo dough stuffed with carrots and low-calorie peas, and then backed in the oven will be low in fat.


Although samosas are a delicious dish and add nutrition to our diet, all types of samosas are not a healthy diet.  It depends on from what material they are stuffed of. But, we can say that veggie samosa can be comparatively a nutritious snack when we compare to meat samosa.  But it should be low in cholesterol, fat, and sodium.  One should see the nutritional information described in the packet before buying it.  One can make samosa at their home also with taking care of the ingredient.
