A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are so aligned in such as way that the full Moon passes through the shadow of Earth in space. This Shadow of the Earth is also called as The Earth’s Umbra. A total lunar eclipse happens when a single ray of did not reach to the moon. It gets completely blocked by the shadow of earth.

Once in a Blue moon

We know that the Moon orbit around Earth is elliptical. The point of the orbit closest to Earth is called perigee. The point farthest from Earth is known as apogee. Tonight’s moon will be eye catching because it will at Perigee i.e. closest to earth. The moon will be 14 times larger and 32 time brighter than average full moon. That is why it is termed as SUPERMOON.

Usually, the full moon occurs once in a month. But this year, the first full moon happened on January 2. Now, on 31 january, another one is about to happen. Its quite rare to see another full moon in a Month. That’s why the second full moon is called Blue Moon.  That is why, there is a phrase of a rare occurrence of any event as “Once in a Blue Moon”.

The Blood moon:-

The moon is totally darkened by the Earth. Here, the rays of sun crossing through the Earth’s atmosphere will get shredded in its constituent colors. The red color will get spread in the atmosphere, in result of which the moon will reflect in a Red Copper pigment. This is the reason why a totally eclipsed moon is called as ‘BLOOD MOON’. There is no other signifiance related to this.
